Penal Reform Solutions offer a range of services to promote Penal Reform in England and Wales, and internationally. Please contact PRS if you would like to discuss future collaboration. The following services are some examples, which are available to organisations. Bespoke consultancy work and training can be designed to meet specific organisational needs.
The Growth Project was designed by Dr Sarah Lewis and can be adapted for any correctional setting. It has been designed in light of the findings from the Norway Growth Project, which identified key principles of growth in those who have offended. It focuses on practically co-constructing a rehabilitative culture in order to address levels of harm, enhance safety and drive quality, using a collaborative approach. The Growth Project is a user-led initiative that gives responsibility to those that live and work within a correctional environment, whether that is prison or probation. It focuses on providing research-informed solutions, whilst also creating an inclusive platform to solve those issues experienced by an organisation can can stunt personal growth.
Practitioner Growth Training
This training is for prison staff to increase their knowledge of rehabilitative culture and how they can contribute to it. It also supports staff in promoting positive and meaningful relationships with service users, to increase the knowledge and confidence of staff. Topics covered include; developing positive working relationships, understanding ruptures and how to mend relationships when they break down, building resilience and confidence, challenging effectively and managing emotions.
Creating a Rehab Culture
There are a suite of services for correctional organisations to support them in developing an environment that promotes personal growth and a rehabilitative culture. These include; a rehab needs analysis, creating a rehabilitative vision as well as services that support cultural change.
Reflective Practice Training
The aim of this training is to understand the purpose, benefit and practice of reflection, build team cohesion through reflection, consider a strategy of reflection and consider how we might encourage reflection in others.
This training is specific to the correctional environment and is individually designed to address issues within practice. It is challenging, innovatively facilitated and feedback is gathered to capture its benefits and areas for improvement. This training features academic knowledge linked to reflection, practice based examples and is centred on relationships, making it relevant, interesting and informative.
Research Strategy Services
Understanding the impact of any initiative is important for any organisation. Fully understanding the root causes of a long lasting problem within a correctional context is also necessary, in order to design sustainable and meaningful solutions. PRS provides training to organisation in research methods, designing a meaningful research strategy and analysing data. Staff and service users are involved in the training, deliver the research with the support of PRS and analyse the data themselves, in order to build capacity within the organisation as well include a range of people in the solution. This has recently be implemented at HMP Guys Marsh in the form of a Violence Summit and Drug Strategy, leading to a rich insight into these complex issues.
